Grain Storage Hangars in Kazakhstan

Grain is one of the most demanding commodities to store. Design errors in a hangar lead to condensation, mould and crop losses. In Kazakhstan, where the agricultural sector represents a significant share of the economy, a properly designed grain storage hangar pays for itself in 2–4 seasons.

What Matters When Designing a Grain Hangar

Ventilation

Active aeration is a mandatory requirement. Without it, grain "burns" — it heats up and deteriorates in quality. Ventilation systems are built into the floor as perforated channels or sub-floor ducts.

Flooring

Concrete floor with moisture insulation. Wooden flooring is completely unsuitable — it absorbs moisture and provides a breeding ground for fungus. Concrete thickness — minimum 150 mm, reinforced.

Walls and Roof

For long-term storage — insulated (sandwich panels). Condensation on the inner roof surface drips onto the grain and causes localised wetting. For short-term storage (up to 3 months) an uninsulated metal hangar with forced ventilation is acceptable.

Gates

Wide gates (5–6 m) for grain-loading vehicles. Height — at least 4–5 m.

Regulatory Framework in Kazakhstan

Grain storage design is governed by:

  • SN RK 3.02-43-2013 "Grain Warehouses";
  • Sanitary standards for grain storage;
  • Fire safety requirements for agricultural storage facilities.

Grain stores with a capacity above 500 tonnes require full design documentation and a construction permit.

Grain Hangar Formats

FormatCapacityFeatures
Flat-bottom hangarup to 3,000 tclassic option, easy to build
Conical-floor hangarfrom 500 tgravity unloading
Grain bin (silo)from 200 tcompact, higher cost

For most farms, the optimal choice is a flat-bottom hangar 18–24 m wide with a length matched to requirements.

Ключевой вывод
The key requirements for a grain hangar are: active ventilation, a concrete floor with moisture insulation and insulated walls. Cutting costs on these elements leads to crop losses that far exceed any savings on construction.
